Last September 29th, our team presented the project in the open forum of the Researchers’ Night. The activity took place in Plaza Nueva, near Sevilla’s town hall, in the center of the city, and it was attended by around 20 people. The activity was open to all, and the goal was to make research accessible to other types of public. We talked about urban resilience, as linked to the main global problems, including the so-called climate emergency, and that takes as a reference specific and diverse experiences that are significant, especially at the socio-community level and from the point of view of social cohesion. We tried to transmit the idea of the project not from the definition of these concepts and the establishment of a theoretical framework but in a simpler and more entertaining way, which consisted of an exhibition of expressive photographs. Antonio, Jose and Marian first presented the CoNECT project and UPO’s participation in it, making an emphasis on the multidisciplinarity of the team. They then proceeded to introduce some of the intiatives that the project has collected information about and their relevance. We presented, through images, the work of Mosaikfabriken in Gothenbourg, Zone Sensible in Paris, Omslag Werkplaats voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling in Eindhoven, and that of two initiatives in Seville, Parque Estoril and Jardines en el Aire. From the point of view of the general methodology, we commented on the interest of Citizen Science and the generation of networked and "back and forth" learning. We concluded with a reflection on the possible links of these experiences with the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs, highlighting their participatory, social and community components. All in all, a successful event that brought our research a bit closer to the general public.

workshop with the network Vårt Hammarkullen images from the 2 workshop groups (photos by Emílio Brandão) On the 18th October 2023, the Swedish CoNECT team, through Emílio Brandão, ran a workshop in Hammarkullen with the community network Vårt Hammarkullen. This workshop is part of a collaboration with this network who has shown interest to develop a self-exploration process into a grounded or rooted understandings of how the network and the community operates, organizes, and acts in different situations and processes. After following a series of their community meetings, we understood a mutual growing interest to delve into a more conceptual workshop exploring and mapping different terms and words used by the community members and connected to their actions and the associated meanings. The workshop was prepared with a few word-prompts to initiate and instigate an iterative flow in the discussions, and participants had the challenge to precisely avoid those word-prompts, to move beyond possible languages that could be experienced as objectifying or othering the narratives and subjects of the workshop’s discussions. 13 people participated in this workshop in 2 separate groups, and the work and discussions lasted a total of 1 intensive hour. workshop, research seminar, and participation at a local community cultural event The ECHO Project  - Echoing the Communal Self (ECO in Portuguese), from Portugal, visiting and collaborating with our project in Hammarkullen, Gothenburg From October 9th to 14th, 2023, the Swedish CoNECT team invited the graphic designers and researchers Daniel Brandão, from Universidade do Minho, Portugal, and Nuno Martins, from Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e do Ave, Portugal, to lead a workshop in Hammarkullen, Gothenburg, Sweden, involving residents of the neighborhood to create documentary videos capturing oral history related to the local Carnival. The Hammarkullen Carnival is a locally significant cultural event recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage according to the Levande Kulturarv  homepage ( https://levandekulturarv.se/in-english/the-inventory/submissions/hammarkullen-carnival ). The workshop was coordinated by CoNECT researcher Emílio Brandão, in collaboration with the local cultural organization HAM-SAM Hammarkullen, and took place in the neighborhood, at the teaching facilities of the Chalmers University of Technology. The workshop created the space for residents to tell their own stories, and through video recording and editing skills. It facilitated the sharing of personal, social, and community narratives reflecting the diverse cultures within the neighborhood. Hammarkullen has for decades celebrated its residents' cultural diversity through the Hammarkullen Carnival. With this initiative, the aim was to encourage residents to take control over their own narratives, promote mutual learning, and foster discussions about local culture and community values aligned with those cultivated by the ECHO and the CoNECT projects. The methodology followed a similar structure to the one that the team of facilitators has used for several years in studio teaching with architecture students at the Chalmers University, and on other research contexts such as the Museum do Resgate  project ( https://museudoresgate.org/# ), the Future Places’ series of conference workshops CitaDocs ( https://citadocsblog.wordpress.com/ ), and the ECHO community project ( https://eco.ipca.pt/ ), all in Portugal, a methodology now adapted to Hammarkullen. Moments of the workshop: introductions, distribution of equipment, technical discussions, editing previews, supervision (photos by Nuno Martins) After an intensive workshop week involving 11 participants, five individual videos were produced and edited by workshop participants, residents of Hammarkullen with limited to no prior experience with video production, and mostly using material coming from their personal archives. These works were publicly showcased and presented at the Culture Walk Festival held on October 14, 2023, at the Folkets Hus, within the Hammarkullen neighborhood. This was a wider celebratory event about different forms and manifestations of local culture. Providing tools and platforms for self-expression and storytelling not only preserves cultural heritage but also strengthens social bonds and fosters resilience within diverse urban contexts. Through collaborative efforts like these, design emerges not merely as a tool for aesthetics but as a catalyst for social change and sustainable development. On October 12, 2023, our collaborators in the audiovisual workshop Nuno Martins and Daniel Brandão, from Portugal, presented their project at a seminar titled "ECHO Project: Design's contribution to the dissemination of community practices created in social neighborhoods", on invitation of the CoNECT project. Held at the facilities of Chalmers University of Technology, this seminar aimed to share the methodologies and outcomes of the ECHO project with a wider audience of researchers and educators in the Swedish context, fostering connections for future collaborations. Nuno Martins and Daniel Brandão from the ECHO-project presenting their work at the seminar on 12th October (photo by Emílio Brandão) The project ECHO-Echoing the Communal Self (ECO in Portuguese) ( https://eco.ipca.pt/ ) is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and it aims to identify, document, interpret and disseminate current self-regulated community practices in social housing neighborhoods in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. Arguing that COVID-19 pandemic regulations have had a significant impact on the nature and viability of these practices, the proposal to document and disseminate these practices aims to strengthen mechanisms of empathy and social solidarity among the population. Using Design research, the aim is to disseminate these community practices to other socially disadvantaged communities. The project also wants to encourage the development of these type of practices among these communities, showing them that it's possible to both be successful and learn how to communicate about it. There is therefore a mission that is not only social and inclusive, but also educational, while providing the means of access to knowledge and active citizenship. In this seminar the researchers presented the work process, the methodologies, and the results of the ongoing project after almost two years of work. public event organized by the community network Vårt Hammarkullen Vårt Hammarkullen is a network of residents and others who are actively engaged in the community well-being in the city district Hammarkullen, in Gothenburg, beyond the mission of their organizations. Vårt Hammarkullen, which started under this name around 15 years ago, has both generated agency and values when it comes to the definition and consolidation of community cohesion in the area. It engages in public debates where it represents the voices of the various communities and their residents. It also has co-created events such as thematic community dinners, social gatherings at the area’s park, barbecue or sports competitions, and co-initiated other longer processes, having a leading role in the discussion of the “Hammarkullen model” of societal development, based on local grassroots organizing. On the 28th August 2023, Vårt Hammarkullen network organized a half-day event at the scenery of Jubileumskompassen in the center of the city of Gothenburg. The event was well attended despite being on a rainy Monday in August. It included a small exhibition of photographs and artefacts from the history of Hammarkullen, several short music concerts by children from the Hammarkullen School and students from Angereds Folkhögskola, presentations of different associations, and initiatives from the neighborhood, with a special emphasis on local culture and the importance of Folkets Hus as its local epicenter, and a few speeches about the “Hammarkullen model”. L'équipe aaa/CoNECT a tenu un stand à la 'fête des légumes', qui s'est déroulée de 14h à 18h le samedi après-midi 3 juin 2023. AAA avait une table sous un abri de jardin, entre les stands du 'Vrac' et de la 'Petite Liberté', devant la Maison de Quartier. Le matériel comprenait 1 dessin du quartier sur lequel les gens pouvaient dessiner; des cartes précédentes ont été laissées en pile sur la table pour aider à comprendre ce que les initiatives écologiques pouvaient signifier, et comme inspiration ; des stylos de couleur pour dessiner sur la carte ; derrière, une cloison montrait le nom du projet EcoLab, les coordonnées, et quelques dessins des enfants montrant ce qu'ils voulaient proposer dans la cour de leur école. Les participants Le soleil brillait et il y avait une bonne foule, avec un public de tous âges, de toutes capacités et de toutes cultures. Certains venaient de Paris et les environs, et d'autres de plus loin. Les enfants ont également participé: les plus jeunes ont aimé colorier la carte même s'ils n'ont pas ajouté d'initiatives. La pluart des personnes nous ont dit qu'ils trouvaient la lecture de la carte facile. Mais, que ce serait bien de rajouter les noms des routes. Les stands Les autres stands etaient tenus par: La Maison de Quartier - Saint Denis (organisateur de l'événement) Vrac Territoires La Zone Sensible - Parti poetique La Petite Liberte - atelier de pyrogravure La Régie de Quartiers - Saint Denis Solicycle - Ateliers de vélos solidaires Association du Sport Santé Nutritionnistes de Saint Denis (Mairie) La Ferme Ouverte Territoires - Maison de l’ecologie De nombreux autres stands d'occasion vendant des vêtements, des livres, des jouets, etc. ‘Accordez vos Vélos’ - Festival itinérant à vélo (orchestre et chant à 17h, tous venus avec leurs instruments sur leurs vélos) Au fur et à mesure que les gens passaient, nous leur disions bonjour et leur demandions s'ils souhaitaient une explication sur le projet avec l'école de La Courtille. La plupart ont accepté et sont restés pour en savoir plus. Une personne a fait remarquer qu'il y avait beaucoup de projets et de stands sur l'écologie.

L'objectif de cet atelier était d'impliquer les élèves dans les étapes préliminaires de conception de l'EcoLab. Manon a présenté le projet EcoLab comme un processus visant à développer un espace pour l'écologie à l'école. Nous avons également discuté de la signification de l'écologie - en tant que transition écologique - et de la manière dont cela pourrait se traduire dans le domaine urbain - comme la plantation de fleurs pour dissuader les tas d'ordures, ou la création de compost pour permettre la gestion des déchets alimentaires. Les participants Les élèves étaient une classe de 6e. Le professeur de développement durable et le professeur de technologie ont participé à l'animation et connaissaient tous les élèves. Exercice 1 : Exploration du potentiel et des problèmes écologiques dans la cour de l'école L'atelier a commencé par un exercice de marche visant à observer et à cartographier les potentiels et les problèmes écologiques dans la cour de l'école. La classe s'est divisée en quatre groupes de quatre à cinq élèves chacun, sous la direction de l'un des adultes. Chaque groupe a reçu une carte imprimée A3 du site de l'école, préparée à l'avance. Au cours d'une promenade dans la direction de leur choix, ils ont identifié des zones d'intérêt écologique, documentées par des photographies prises par les animateurs. Les élèves ont identifié de nombreux endroits difficiles d'accès. Par exemple, un espace vert au nord du site, adjacent au jardin clôturé, où ils pensaient pouvoir s'asseoir à l'extérieur et prendre leur repas. Ils ont également identifié des zones plus isolées pour se détendre (dans des hamacs et a l'ombre) pendant les pauses. Il y a quelques ruches sur le site de l'école, qui, selon eux, pourraient être mieux accessibles, et des fleurs sauvages plantées pour permettre aux abeilles de se nourrir. Les autres idées vont de la récupération de l'eau aux toits verts, en passant par les cellules photovoltaïques sur les toits, le chargement des voitures électriques et des vélos collectifs... Les idées vont de la biodiversité à la capture des énergies renouvelables et à l'exploration en plein air dans un esprit social, s'étendant au voisinage. Exercice 2 : l'écologie dans le programme scolaire Cet exercice s'est déroulé en classe. Dans les mêmes groupes et par tables, chaque groupe a reçu 3 questions écrites à la main sur des feuilles A3 collées les unes à la suite des autres. Les questions étaient les suivantes: - Avez-vous des cours liés à l'écologie ? - Quelles activités liées à l'écologie pourriez-vous entreprendre dans votre quartier et avec qui ? - De quel type de matériel auriez-vous besoin ? Q1 : Les matières que les enfants ont identifiées comme ayant un lien avec l'écologie sont les suivantes : Les sciences de la vie et de la terre, la chimie et la physique, la technologie de conception et la géographie. Q2 : Les activités les plus courantes que les enfants pensent pouvoir entreprendre dans leur quartier sont les suivantes : Le jardinage, le ramassage des déchets, les promenades à vélo, l'écologisation (par la plantation d'aliments, d'arbres ou d'autres plantes, ou de murs verts) et le recyclage. Q3 : Les propositions d'équipement les plus courantes dans tous les groupes sont les suivantes : Outils de jardinage, arbres, plantes et graines, matériaux de construction (bois et outils), tables, chaises et parasols. Un groupe a proposé un étang. Et un autre, des cellules photovoltaïques. Exercise 3: Ecological design in the school Toujours en groupes, les élèves ont été invités à dessiner individuellement leurs interventions écologiques à l'école, sur une feuille A4 préparée à l'avance, chacune présentant un dessin au trait en noir et blanc du site de l'école, comme précédemment. Il leur a été demandé d'imaginer comment ils réaliseraient à l'extérieur les activités écologiques qu'ils avaient identifiées au cours de leurs leçons. Des cartes de précédents avaient été préparées pour stimuler les idées si nécessaire - tous les enfants n'ont pas pris les cartes, mais elles ont été bien utilisées par tous, que ce soit pour les copier directement ou simplement pour s'en inspirer pour leur propre conception. Espaces d'intervention : Selon les enfants, l'écologie est inextricablement liée aux activités sociales et au bien-être. Leurs propositions se situaient autour de l'école, dans des espaces sous-utilisés, et visaient à activer les espaces morts d'une manière écologique. Leur compréhension de l'écologie allait de l'énergie renouvelable aux espaces à planter et aux espaces pour leur propre bien-être et celui des enseignants.

22/03/23 Le premier atelier du 'Terreau' organisé au Plus Petit Cirque du Monde (PPCM) avait pour but de lancer les discussions du Labo CoNECT entre les différents acteurs de Bagneux, y compris le PPCM, le Lycée avant le Lycée (LAL), Compagnie SourouS, la mairie de Bagneux, Atelier d'Architecture Autogeree (AAA) et la Chair EFF&T (ENSAPLV). Au cours de la session, chaque acteur a pris part au partage de ce que le 'Terreau' signifie pour eux et comment les activités du Terreau pourraient être bénéfiques pour la résilience collective. Pour cette session, nous avons préparé un calendrier partagé - des bandes qui pourraient être remplies par chaque organisation, afin de croiser les activités tout au long de l'année, et d'identifier les opportunités potentielles de collaboration. Nous avons également préparé une cartographie des initiatives de Bagneux, que nous utiliserons pour construire un réseau d'activités communautaires écologiques/résilientes dans la région.

01/02/2023 L'équipe CoNECT a visité les locaux de l'un des principales partenaires du projet à Bagneux, une organisation appelée le Plus Petit Cirque du Monde (PPCM). Le PPCM était à l'origine une école de cirque. Fondé en 1992 par des habitants de Bagneux, le PPCM a pour objectif d'utiliser les arts du cirque pour contribuer à la vitalité du quartier. Il fonctionne comme une école de cirque et de cultures urbaines, une résidence artistique, un espace de spectacle et un lieu de rencontre. Aujourd'hui, le PPCM est reconnu internationalement comme une institution culturelle : sa mission est de mobiliser l'art et la culture pour le développement civique, économique et urbain de la région. En 2015, Patrick Bouchain (Grand Prix national d'urbanisme en 2019) et Loïc Julienne ont construit un lieu physique permanent pour le PPCM, sous la forme d'un chapiteau de 28 mètres de haut. Le directeur Elefterios Kechagioglou nous a fait visiter les espaces intérieurs et extérieurs. Nous avons également visité un autre projet du PPCM en collaboration avec La Preuve Par 7, appelé le Lycée Avant le Lycée. Ce projet consiste à activer le futur site d'une école secondaire à Bagneux avec des activités liées au design autour de l'apprentissage, utilisant au mieux l'espace comme lieu d'expérimentation dans le but de s'infuser a la pédagogie de l'école une fois qu'elle sera construite.
