On Sunday, March 10th, the second group meeting of the URBOTECA Fellowship 2024 took place at the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work in Bucharest. The fellows had the opportunity to delve into the concept of the "Third Space" within communities. The day was filled with discussions, brainstorming sessions, and creative explorations, highlighting the importance of places that offer people a neutral and open environment, distinct from their homes or workplaces, where they can interact in a relaxed and informal manner.
Recap of the Meeting
Evaluating the Previous Challenge
We began the day by evaluating the previous challenge, a role-playing game called "Scenarios in the Heart of the Neighborhood." This exercise allowed the teams to share their experiences and insights from this urban creativity activity. Each team presented how they collaborated and documented their initial interactions, setting the groundwork for a deeper understanding of urban spaces.
Exploring the "Third Space"
The concept of the "Third Space" was explored through post-it note games and guided discussions. The fellows analyzed various attributes and types of these spaces, ranging from courtyards between apartment blocks and pop-up markets to neighborhood libraries and urban terraces. These discussions highlighted the essential attributes that make these places valuable for community cohesion, providing a conducive environment for idea exchange, social bonding, and participation in cultural or recreational activities.
Presenting Imaginative Discussions
The fellows presented the outcomes of these imaginative discussions, proposing concrete examples that illustrate the diversity and importance of the "Third Space" for communities. This was a crucial step in understanding how urban spaces contribute to strengthening the social fabric and promoting authentic human interactions.
New Challenge Launched
At the end of the meeting, a new challenge was launched for the fellows to tackle by the next meeting. The teams are encouraged to explore and document "Third Spaces" beyond the host areas, identifying both physical and symbolic connections between them.
